UPDATE:
I apologize for any inconvenience, but I am focused on a new project leaving very little time for Conscious Soap. If you have any questions or would like to place a custom order please reach out to: iam@conscioussoap.com. Thank you and many blessings.
Simple soap with few ingredients for a clear intention.
Our intention is to make the highest quality soap, using only organic, vegan, and fair trade ingredients utilizing the antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties of essential oils. Conscious Soap is also a reminder that every thought, word, and action impacts those around us and our planet - no matter how small. We believe filling our lives with as many reminders as possible will help us all on our collective journeys to higher consciousness.
We are proud to partner with the Baraka Shea Butter to source organic and fair trade cocoa and shea butter. Our shea butter is hand processed by women-owned cooperatives in Ghana. More information can be found in the links below.
Be Conscious.
Made with love in Coachella Valley, California.
About Me:
Conscious Soap was founded by me... David Schulenburg, in 2020 when the year's circumstances called for a life change.
I was working for a Hollywood animation studio. And before that, I had been a VFX and commercial producer in New York City.
For a few years prior, I had begun experiencing a slow but steady awakening. I was 5 months into an intensive meditation teacher's training when a scandal involving the founder rocked our community. Due to the scandal, I did not feel that the time was right for me to complete my training. I announced that I would be stepping away. A week later, the entire country was on lockdown.
2020 changed all of our lives forever. I loved the studio where I was working, but the entire industry was turned upside down when people stopped going to movie theaters.
I took a year off from work, and that was when Conscious Soap was born. The calling to start this business was so strong, it felt as though the Universe had struck me with a bolt of lighting. BOOM! I just had to make this happen. It became a compulsion. I couldn't stop, as if I was being driven by something outside of myself.
Since early childhood, I have struggled with psoriasis, so I have always been a fan of great soap that doesn't irritate sensitive skin. But I wanted to create the perfect soap. The soap that I had never been able to find. It could only be made with the best possible ingredients: organic, sustainable, vegan, and of course, chemical-free. And I only wanted ingredients that were only essential to the soap - no extra additives of any kind.
It was such a blessing when I found that I could source shea butter from women-owned cooperatives in Ghana. This is a way to give back to the communities where these materials are harvested and produced. Fairtrade is a crucial part of Conscious Soap.
After much trial and error, I am proud to say that I created the best soap that I had ever used. I love how big the bar is, although I do prefer to cut mine in half. Cutting the bars in half is a fun interactive way for others to experience just how much soap they get in a single bar. I love how good the lather feels. It makes me feel clean, but I can tell it won't dry out my skin or aggravate my psoriasis. And it smells clean and natural, exactly how it should.
My cousin (who is more of a sister than a cousin) said to me, "if you are going to make soap, then you have to have a body butter to go with it." So I got to work figuring out a formula for body butter. Early in the development process, I woke up one morning to discover the patches on my elbows were almost gone. (Those of you with psoriasis know exactly what I mean.) The nutrient-dense cocoa butter, shea butter, and olive oil, along with the anti-inflammatory properties of both essential oils, seemed to do what no other over-the-counter cream, lotion, or butter had been able to do. I still need to use some prescription ointments from time to time. However, my newly created body butter became an instant game-changer for daily maintenance.
I am very proud of my products. In my opinion, they are the best out there, and I hope you get to experience them.
I am currently living in the Coachella Valley area with my boyfriend. He was able to witness all of this firsthand and has supported me every step of the way.
Stay Conscious!
David
Baraka Shea Butter
Conscious Soap’s shea butter is proudly sourced through a partnership with Baraka Shea Butter. All Baraka Shea Butter is Community Certified Fair Trade. This means that the women who make it meet annually to review their relationship with Baraka Shea Butter and whether or not they have been treated fairly. They review and discuss their relationship with Baraka over the past year and decide whether or not to let Baraka use the Community Certified Fair Trade logo for the coming year.
Fair treatment includes:
Payment of a premium price above market price
Negotiation of price and relationship as a group
A respectful and dignified relationship between Baraka and the women
Support for community, family, youth, education and other priorities as identified by the women’s groups
Plus, other priorities and issues as identified by the women’s group
The women who make Baraka Shea Butter do everything by hand, using age-old techniques passed down through generations. Living on the edge of the Sahara with its dry, harsh conditions meant their face, hands, and skin were battered daily by sun, sand, and heat. Centuries of practice has taught them how to extract every bit of goodness from the shea nut. That quality is passed on in every package of Baraka Shea Butter and every product that is made from it.
Every time anyone purchases Baraka Shea Butter, or any products made with it; they have a direct impact on the women, families, and communities in northern Ghana. We believe we have the strongest and most authentic community impact connection of any shea butter producer in the world, and we take great pride in that.
